The ball screws on my 30 year old mill are very worn, and the power feed on the y-axis add a certain amount of drag to the whole mechanism. As a result, the screws are reluctant to 'reverse' on my worn machine and it acts like a machine with acme screws.

Shop around, think there are sources that sell quality Acme screws where you would only need to machine the ends to your needs. If your machine has a DRO then it becomes less important to buy high accuracy screws. Would not go the ball screw route.
