I use Kool Mist. It was designed to be used in a misting application but it also works well in a flood or stream type of system as well. Recently I started using kool-mist with a mister I rigged up from an old RO filters remains. I like it for aluminum milling, but finding the right balance between coolant to lubricate and cool, and too much causing the chips to stick has been a little tough. You can use kool-mist for flood coolant I believe, but I haven't done that.

The old Vactra oils are now labelled "Vacuoline". Lathe ways are typically Vactra #2 (old)/ Vacuoline 1409(new). Mills often use the heavier oil because of the vertical ways-you want maximum cling time to those vertical dovetails. The lathe oils are typically ISO 68 weight. My mill uses ISO 220 weight which I think used to be called Vactra #4.

We tend to use our manual BP mills for one-off and repair work, so kool-mist works fine for us. It's never on long enough to fill up the shop as you can control the vapor to keep a fine stream of air on their tool tip. More isn't better with these. Using actual mist coolant over oil or flood type coolants in the can helps too.

As for pollution, the oil use is so minimal, and sawdust's ability to absorb is so great, that I don't see where a drop a minute is going to hurt a thing. When I use the mix, I use 3/8 gallon b&c oil, 5/8 gallon clear kerosene and a gallon will last at least a week.
